An Indoor cat or an outdoor cat?

Cats have never being indoor animals but circumstances have made them. Main reasons for this are manmade rules and dangers in outdoors which are not natural.

A cat is pretty well suited to a natural environment which doesn’t have much of human interruptions. They are much aware of dangerous species and etc. but what they are not aware of is manmade things like rat poisons, highways and how much speed does a vehicle have etc. So, this creates much safer zone in your house for a cat.

Because of that an outdoor cats’ lifetime has shorten to 2-4 years while lifespan of an indoor cat is 14-18 years. In many states it is illegal to let your cat be an outdoor wanderer. When nature intended for cats to live in outdoors, it wasn’t a time which had traffic, poisons or cat haters. Also there are several deadly and serious diseases your cat can catch from other animals. Thousands of cats get injured or dead by car accidents every single day. So don’t let your cat become one of them.

On the other hand you cant’ make an outdoor cat and indoor one suddenly. Some of them are used to outdoors. Taking care of outdoor cats will be much easier than indoor cats. Because indoor cat happen to get stressed much easily and we have to accept, taking much care in indoors or anything else will not make them live forever. They will die someday just as we humans. So let them enjoy their lives. So if you are living in an environment where is safe from above dangers and if it is legal, adopt an outdoor cat if you like.

Remember you also cannot change an indoor cat into an outdoor one in a sudden, since he is not even aware of the natural dangers for a long period. So keep your indoor cat indoor and outdoor cat outdoor and either way take good care of them and protect them.

Cat Peeing Everywhere in House? – Why and How to Stop This?

The reasons commonly cited when cats are being thrown out of the house is somehow related to the cat’s urination problem. Many cat owners find it un-tolerable when their cats started peeing everywhere else in the house except in the litter box. This is understandable. Who would want a house that is full of urine smell and not to mention the daunting task of having to remove the urine odor from places where your cats urinate.

Many cat owners always go away with the thoughts that their cats are doing this out of spite. But this is simply not true. Cats do not do things simply out of spite. There are reasons where some cats are not using their litter box as expected and cat owners have to find out these underlying reasons first before they can put a stop to this unruly behavior seen in their cats.

Here are some common causes of the litter box problem seen in cats:

Medical problems:
Some medical problems may cause inappropriate urination in cats. These include urinary tract infections (UTI), cystitis, kidney stones or blockage and diabetes. There is usually pain involved in urination for cats suffering from these illness and they may associate the use of the litter box with the discomfort. Thus avoid or stop using the litter box totally. When your cats suddenly stop using the litter box, it’s always good to keep a close eye on them as some of these problems may be life threatening and medical attention must be given immediately.

Your Cat’s Age
For old cats, especially those with arthritic problems, bladder control problems like incontinence may be caught short when needing to urinate. Provide more litter boxes, placed at multi locations to make it more accessible to your geriatric cats or cats with physical limitations may help solve the problem.

Stress
Stress can cause litter-box problems. Cats can be stressed by events that their owners may not think of as traumatic. Changes in things that even indirectly affect the cat, like moving, adding new animals or family members to your household—even changing your daily routine—can make your cat feel anxious
In a multi-cat household, some cats may control access to the litter box making the litter box inaccessible to the weaker or timid ones.

Territorial Marking
Cats that are not spayed or neutered will tend to spray in areas around the house instead of using the litter box. This is an act of territories marking and usually the problem can be easily resolved by spaying or neutering your cats once they reaches puberty, usually 6 months of age.

Litter Box Management
If your cat isn’t comfortable with her litter box or can’t easily access it, she probably won’t use it. Here are some litter box related problems that may cause your cat to eliminate outside of her box:

1. Litter box is dirty
2. Insufficient number of litter box available. Cats prefer to have their own litter box so if you keep more than one cat, be sure to make one available for each cat.
3. Size and types of the litter box. Too small a size may not appeal to your cat and geriatric cats or cats with physical limitations may have a difficult time using certain types of litter boxes such as top-entry boxes, or litter boxes with high sides.
4. Too much litter. Cats prefer one to two inches of litter
5. Types of cat litter used. Cats prefer soft texture litter that is kind to their soft paws.
6. Location of litter box. Like people, cats develop preferences for where they like to eliminate and may avoid locations they don’t like. This means they might avoid their litter box if it’s in a location they dislike.

Domestication of the Ancient Egyptian Cat and Rise of the Cat Goddess Bastet

In Ancient Egypt, the cat was known as mau and played a significant role in the society and mythology of Ancient Egypt. Even feral and untamed, the cat served a useful purpose for the farmers in Ancient Egypt by protecting their crops from vermin. Cats protected the grainaries of Egypt from rats and mice, and earned respect from the human population of Egypt for their ability to battle and kill Cobras and other snakes. Two breeds of cats populated the region at the time, the jungle cat (Felis chaus) and the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica).

The African wildcat was more docile and possessed a demeanor that was more conducive to domestication. A mutually beneficial existence where the cats controlled the vermin and the humans tolerated and provided protection from other predators who avoided humans, helped to push along the domestication process. Another influence on domestication was the practice of raising kittens caught in the wild as pets, a fashionable practice amongst Ancient Egypt's wealthiest citizens. Evolving beyond mere tolerance, the Egyptian people began to embrace the newly domesticated creature as a symbol of grace and elegance.

Ancient Egyptian was deeply influenced by the animal world and worship of animals was common. Mafdet, the deity associated with justice and execution, was depicted as a fierce lion-headed goddess and the earliest representations of Bastet from around the Second Dynasty show a fierce lion-like warrior goddess. Over centuries as cats became more domesticated and placid, the cat goddess Bastet or Bast, rose in popularity to become the deity representing fertility, motherhood and protection. Statues from later periods depict the goddess with the head of a domesticated cat and often accompanied by her kittens, a more representative depiction of her nurturer role and the domestication of the cat in Egypt. Bastet was frequently depicted in her full feline form, often with gold or jewel-encrusted ear and nose rings.

The Pharaoh Shoshenq I built Bubastic, a center of worship for the Goddess Bastet east of the Nile Delta (50 miles Northeast of Cairo) into an important cultural city where thousands would travel each year to celebrate the cult of the cat. In the marketplace, merchants and artists peddled bronze sculptures and jewelry festooned with the image of Bastet or of a mother cat with her kittens, popular with women attempting to conceive a child. Their prayers to Bastet would often ask that they be granted the same number of children as kittens depicted on the amulet they had purchased in the market. The fifth century Greek historian Herodotus described the pilgrimage to Bubastis as a carnival-like scene wild with music and drink to celebrate the Cat Goddess, Bastet.

In death, the cat was often treated with the respect extended a human family member. Family members would grieve their loss deeply and in many cases, the cat's body would receive the full mummification treatment. Their is ample evidence that the burial of a cat was frequently treated with much the same revelry as his human counterpart, including the ceremonial burial with provisions for the afterlife such as dishes of milk and even mummified mice. In the late 1800s at the temple of Bast, a huge tomb holding more than 19 tons of mummified cat remains was discovered. Along with the mummies were the popular bronze statues of the goddess Bast in cat form. It's suspected that most were already stolen by thieves before the discovery as the image remains a popular with collectors of rare antiquities.

While the popularity of the cat in Egypt has waned and they are probably celebrated more in the United States today, statues of the goddess Bastet remain a popular decorating choice for cat-lovers or those who appreciate the feline representation of nurturing motherhood.

How to find your missing cat

Okay, your cat is missing. Naturally you are worried and want to find your pet as soon as you can. Keep in mind that cats do not usually leave home and most often a missing cat is found, but it is best to start your search as soon as you realize that your cat is not around.

Before you search the outside world make certain that your cat is not inside your home. Have you checked everywhere? The basement, loft space, that spare bedroom that never gets used, your shed and garage? How about closets? In the refrigerator, yes cats can become shut in refrigerators, you open the door to take something out and without you noticing your cat slips in.

Check also your washing machine, dryer, anywhere at all that your cat could have slipped into.

Alright, you are certain that your cat is not on your property. Is your cat an “indoor” cat that has somehow got out? Then your pet is not likely to be far, sure she or he will be curious about all the new sights and smells and will likely take time to sample them.
On the other hand your pet could have been threatened and chased by a dog, another cat or some other animal. Search the area around your home. Look in neighbors sheds and garages, ask permission of course, and ask your neighbors to help you search.

Don't forget to look up! Cats that are being chased tend to bolt up trees. They are extremely good at climbing up, you know this from your cat climbing your drapes, but because of the way they are designed, they are not so good at climbing down. So there is your missing cat high in the branches, the threat has gone but your cat can't climb down. Sure she may cry out, but maybe not. So look up trees just in case.

Look also in any small space that your cat could possibly squeeze into, and cats can squeeze into some very small spaces to get away from an attacker. Again don't assume that your cat will cry out, even if you are calling her name. She may be very frightened and confused and prefer to stay where she is safe if she thinks that the whole world is her enemy, so you have to look, using a flashlight will help.

If your cat is an unaltered tomcat then he could have roamed a long ways off in pursuit of doing what comes naturally. He won't come home until he has had his way, and sorry to say, as an un-neutered tom will think nothing of dashing across busy highways to get what he wants, there is the possibility he won't make it home. This is only one of the many good reasons to have your cat, male or female, neutered.

If you are satisfied that your missing cat is nowhere close to your home you will need to widen your search. Enlist help. Also ask people who are regularly in the area, mail carriers, people who walk their dog, moms taking kids to school, if they have seen your cat.
Cats are often more active at night so that may be a good time for a search even in the places you've searched in the day. But don't search alone at night.

Post flyers around the area that your pet was lost in, these can be very successful. Include a photograph of your missing cat and some information, but withhold some. Give your phone number but not your address. If you offer a reward do not state how much on the flyer. Don't forget to regularly check that the flyers are still in place.
Why should you withhold some information? Because unfortunately there are lowlife that will claim to have found your cat, when they have not, for a chance of the finders reward. Never hand over reward money before you have your pet back safe and sound.

Check with cat rescue centers and shelters. Don't wait to do this as many shelters are so overwhelmed with stray and feral cats that they can't keep them long. Your cat may have been wearing identification, but tags, and indeed the collar itself can come off. Don't just phone the shelters, visit them, your cat may be hard to identify from a description given over the phone.

Check with all local veterinarians too. It just might be that your missing cat has been injured and taken to a veterinarian's office. You will also need to contact the highway department or any other agency that deals with road kills. It would be better to you know if the worst has happened.

Have you, or any of your neighbors, had anything delivered to, or collected from, the home recently? It is not unknown for cats to investigate delivery vehicles and get taken away. Check with the delivery company just to make sure.

When you have searched everywhere for your missing cat, search everywhere again. Remember that, although sadly some cats are lost forever, most often a missing cat is found. But you must not give up hope too soon and keep searching. Likely your cat will be back with you before you know it.
